Project Description:

Southern Euboea, the region that corresponds to the ancient political area of the Classical Karystia, is a geographical and cultural entity strategically located at the junction of major maritime routes, well known in ancient literature and important for the history of Greece and the Aegean. Prior to the efforts of the Southern Euboea Exploration Project (SEEP), very little archaeological research had been conducted in the region. Only three sites had been tested by excavation (two by Papavasileiou in the early 1900s, and one by Moutsopoulos in the 1950s), and past surveys had catalogued a total of nine ancient sites. Since 1984, SEEP has added over 375 ancient sites to the record, including 163 on the barren Paximadhi peninsula, the largest contiguous area to be intensively surveyed in Greece. Over the years, research and fieldwork has been conducted by over 200 professionals and student volunteers from half a dozen countries and has been divided into independent phases.
